The Arlegus Tate Family
Over two hundred years ago, between 1760 and 1780, a particular black man was born into slavery. This particular black
man was called Steven Tate, and he was the beginning, As far as we could trace, of what now is an enormous clan of Tate’s.
No one living remembers or knows exactly where old man Steven Tate was born, or to whom he was born. We do know that
he lived in Mississippi, in the county of Noxubee.
Here in Mississippi, he was a slave in bondage. We were not able to track down the name of the woman he took as a wife. She
may have died at an early age, or perhaps sold off from her family. We will probably never know. However, Two Sons were
born to Steven Tate who wore his name. They were William and Renzey Tate, and they too, were slaves. Renzey and William
were Lucky enough to not be sold. They were the last Generation to be born into slavery and continued to live their entire lives
there in Noxubee county, Mississippi.
No one knows how old Renzey was when he took his first wife, a young slave girl called Candice. But three children were born
to their union, two Sons and a daughter, Sandy, William and Laura better known as Lola.
Candice Tate preceded her husband in death. He later took another wife, and her name was Caroline Jeffer. Abolishment of
slavery was then near, and the first child born to their union was born a free man. He was the late Mr. Leon Billy Tate Sr., born
in 1878. There were a total of eight children born to this union, Leon Billy Tate, Captian Tate, Klaus Tate Sr. Frank Tate, Rodie
Tate, Susan A. Tate, Judy Tate and Sammie Tate.
The late Mr. Leon Billie Tate Sr., became a distinguished and highly respected educator, an accomplishment deserving ample
merit, during times of such great “black oppression?
He, Leon Billy Tate Sr., met and fell in love with Martha Jackson. After enjoining her in holy matrimony, nine children were born
of their union, Arlegus Tate Sr., Oscar Tate, Thomas J. Tate Sr., Leon Billy Tate Jr., Sammie D Tate, Stonewall Tate, Elnora Tate,
and Annie Ruth Tate. Arlegus, the eldest son, and father of the Arlegus Tate Sr. Family, Met and Married Annie L Dixon in 1925.
This marriage had one dozen children. They believe in the old saying that everything is “Cheaper by the dozen? Which also
gave rise to a host of Grand and Great Grandchildren.
